Social networking - any end in sight?

Posted in Daily, Seriously?, tech by adam

I think that social networking is officially out of control, and hopefully there are some solutions to this problem on the way. Before I start discussing that though, I thought I would like to say a little about MobyPicture. As you may have seen from the previous post I used it to post a picture straight to wordpress and alerted twitter to the post.Moby Picture

Mobypicture can be described as a blog that collects photographs taken from your mobile phone/PDA. You can send posts to your mobylog via MMS or email, via your phone or normal email. It is quite an easy system to use and I managed to set it up in a few minutes and get a picture on my mobylog quite quickly. When you post to your mobylog you can also ‘hit’ these other social networking services:

I believe that this is what makes MobyPicture a really useful social networking tool. Although I could ‘hit’ these sites with my nokia N95, not everyone has such a device, but most people do have a camera-phone… Setting it up with Wordpress was really easy (with all the above social networking applications it is literally a case of entering your user name and password) and it enters a post for you.

With Wordpress I needed to tweak my default blog category (this was purely out of vanity), but I have not found any other problems with it yet.

So, what’s my problem with Social Networking? Erm, there are just to many sites out there, I am sure that I could easily type out twenty without any difficulty, on top of those printed above! I have been looking forFriend Feed something that can aggregate everything into one place and also post to all my social networking profiles. I have found friendfeed, which aggregates all your social networks together so that you can see everything that you have posted to and, if you have any, look at your contacts and what they have posted. But I want something that I can also post to. So one of the big applications, for me, that came out of the SXSW conference was SocialThing. It is invite only (beta) just now, but I am pretty Social Thingexcited about its arrival. It is described as “the next evolution in keeping in touch with your friends”. This application is going to aggregate all your social networks together and also allow you to post to them all at once as well. It sounds very interesting, you can follow their progress on Twitter or on their blog.

For now I am waiting on an invite to social thing but I would be interested in hearing other opinions and applications that might be out in the wild just now that I have been missing!
