God gave rock and roll to you II, sung by KISS, has the most poignant lyric ever (well to me anyway); ”cause it’s never too late to work nine-to-five”. KISS are made up (now) of Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer, Paul Stanley and Eric Singer and have been going since 1971. Of course the fact that I saw/heard this song for the first time it was in the film Bill and Ted’s bogus journey didn’t lend a lot of weight behind the credentials of the lyric and its meaning. When I first heard it I was a lot younger than I am now and like the youth that I was I never really though much about the lyrics. For me music was all about the sound, the beat, the rhythm, and in many cases it still is.
Alas as I have matured, at some point I started paying attention to what people are saying in their music, to the extent that I become obsessed with lyrics to a crazy state. I will listen to a song over and over trying to work out if it means anything to me. But with the song mentioned above it is so clear and so, well, easy. It is very true, it is never too late to take a mundane job, which is essentially what they (KISS) are saying. Very profound, from four guys that wear costumes and make up in front of thousands of people.
So what is my point? You know you don’t need to have a point to blog! My point, or question is, is it ever too late to give up working nine-to-five?. I never intended working nine-to-five. Primarily because I do my best work when the sun is down (I like the dark, see my about page) and there are no distractions of the phone, TV shows, people messaging, you basically just get on with it. My best pieces of work have come from working at night, my best ever piece of University work came from working at night (admittedly I was doing an all night-er, due to realising that I had written 2000 words of crap the day before an essay was due in). The academic life-style suited me, working when I wanted to, researching the work that I was interested in and generally drinking a lot of (good) coffee.
So, along with improving and developing the theme of this blog site, I am going to also be working on giving up the nine-to-five lifestyle that is strangling my creative energies. I’ll end this blog entry with a quote from another musical genius “there’s more to life than this”; Bjork.
